Properties & Specifications

  • In this section, the Faujasite occurs in colorless, isotropic, isolated and aggregated crystals. It always tends to develop crystals between 100 m and 50 m, grows directly on the vesicle walls.

  • Scanning electron microscopy shows that faujasite occurs in the form of octahedral crystals, and sometimes with twinning. In some samples, two generations of faujasite were recognized. Microprobe study indicates presence of slight difference in the crystal chemistry of the faujasite from the two generation.

  • The XRD patterns of the Jordan faujasite, are similar to the specimen from Sasbach, Germany (XRPDF-file No. 11-0672). The unit cell constant of selected samples is within the range of published data.      (Gottardi & Galli, 1985).

  • The chemistry of the faujasite is variable with a wider range of variation than that of the previously known localities. Two groupings of faujasite were recognized based on the Si/Al, Na/(Na+K) ratios, and the Ca/(Ca+Mg) ratio. The faujasite exhibits the same Ca/(Ca+Mg) ratio but do not necessary have the same Si/Al and Na/(Na+K) ratios.

Mineralogy and chemistry:
X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that JOR-FAUJASITE contains about 57% faujasite, 35% phillipsite, 7% calcite and traces of other constituents of the volcanic clasts. The mineral contains the following major oxides: SiO2, Al2O3, Na2O, CaO, K2O and sometimes MgO. These are incorporated within the mineral structure. Other oxides as Fe2O3, TiO2, P2O5 and MnO occur as traces. They correspond to the presence of non-zeolite accessory phases.
