What is Faujasite?

Faujasite is one member of the zeolite group. it is the least-known treasure of that group ,that can be used  for environmental pollution control, separation science and technology. Natural zeolites including faujasite are volcanic minerals with unique characteristics. They are classified as hydrated aluminosilicates, with an interconnecting lattice structure. The arrangement of the elements in a zeolite crystal gives rise to a honeycomb framework with consistent diameter connecting channels or cages that vary in size from 2.5 to 7.4 angstroms, depending on the type of zeolite mineral. Faujasite has the largest cage, that is 7.4 angstroms This unique structure makes faujasite different from "other" zeolites and bentonite due to the following special properties:

  • Low specific gravity (S. G of pure faujasite 1.93 g/cm3)

  • High cationic-exchange capacity

  • High hydration and dehydration capacity

  • Stable at high temperature applications and wide pH conditions

  • High water adsorption capacity

  • Excellent molecular sieving property

  • Selectivity for many pollutant including heavy metals and ammonium

  • Natural faujasite is regulated as non-hazardous material by the US Dept. of Transport.

  • Natural faujasite is available at low cost relative to resins or synthetic faujasite

  • Capacity for re-use of the faujasite products for several times after regeneration at a very high efficiency.
